The IPCC has released its Sixth Assessment Report (https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg1/#SPM), which emphasized the dangers of climate change, and that many of the risks associated with climate change are now unavoidable. The report will likely provide additional impetus to the Biden Administration’s efforts to reduce and manage climate change through a variety of means, including through mandatory financial disclosures (such as the SEC’s proposed rule concerning disclosure of climate risk). The assessment report is the first in a series, which will be released in f
our stages over the next year. It’s publication comes less than three months before the UN Climate Change Conference, COP26, hosted by the UK and due to take place in Glasgow in November.
The Report makes clear that the world is warming faster than any point in recorded history. The report details the many and far-reaching consequences – more drought, seas rising, greater extremes in temperatures, and on and on – already baked in and what we can expect in future years unless the world acts quickly to aggressively cut emissions and ultimately reach net zero by 2050.
The new report is part of the sixth major assessment of climate science from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was created in 1988.
